Does Alcohol in Perfume Dry Out Your Skin?

Alcohol in perfume can feel drying on some people’s skin because ethanol evaporates quickly and can affect the skin’s surface, particularly when skin is already dry or compromised. Why is alcohol used in perfume?

Alcohol is one of the most common carriers used in traditional spray fragrance.

There’s a good reason for that: ethanol is highly volatile. After perfume is sprayed, the alcohol evaporates rapidly, helping disperse aromatic molecules into the surrounding air.

That contributes to something traditional spray perfume does particularly well: projection.

It creates the initial cloud of fragrance you smell immediately after spraying a perfume.

Riddle perfume oils are designed to behave differently.

Instead of using alcohol to send fragrance into the air, our Roll-Ons place fragrance directly onto the skin, where it stays closer to the body.

Why can alcohol feel drying on skin?

Alcohol evaporates rapidly, and that evaporation can contribute to a dry or tight feeling for some people, especially when the skin barrier is already compromised.

Research on topical ethanol has found that repeated or prolonged exposure can affect skin-barrier properties, although the effect depends greatly on concentration, exposure, formulation and individual skin.

That doesn't mean everyone needs to avoid alcohol in skincare or fragrance.

It means that if your skin doesn't love alcohol-based products, you don't necessarily have to give up perfume.

Does perfume oil contain alcohol?

It depends on the product, but Riddle Roll-Ons do not.

Yes. Applying fragrance to moisturized skin can create a better base for an oil perfume.

Is alcohol in perfume bad for your skin?
